About OISCA TN

Tamilnadu in the southernmost part of Peninsula India is an ecologically, and economically and environmentally vibrant state with Chennai as its capital. It has 32 districts. Tamilnadu's geographical area is about 130,058 km and constitutes 4% of the countries area. It is a very rich state with varied topographic,edaphic,climatic features. The elevation ranges from sea level to 2637mtr. The state boasts of its coastal plains,central plateau,western ghats and eastern ghats. The population of the state is 7214 7030 census 2011. The temp varies from 20 to 45 degrees during the daytime and between 15 to 30 degrees at night times, depending on the elevation and geographical position. The state is endowed with rich forests. The coastal zone of 1076 km is spread across 13 districts, which is 15% of the total coastal line of India. The state is unique in that it is enclosed within both the coasts, east and west coast.

The state is endowed with its own agriculture, and horticulture systems. The principal crops cultivated are Paddy, Cholam, Cumbu, Ragi, Maize, and small millets, besides pulses, oilseeds, and other crops. The state is proud of its fisheries, animal husbandry, sericulture sectors. The industrial, education, health, and infrastructural growth, roads and transports have significantly contributed to the states premier position in the country. It is a most industrialized economy in the country and highly urbanized with 48% of its people living in urban areas. The state has in place good community development and social welfare programmes. It has a rich repository of flora and fauna.

The state attracts tourists from far and wide because of its rich landscapes, seascapes, cultural and traditional richness. The state has a forest cover of 23,338km, covering 18%land area of the state. Some of the districts rich in forests are Nilgiris, Kanyakumari, Theni, Coimbatore Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Salem, and Dharmapuri. There are 9 major forest types, thus making the state home to many endemic and threatened flora and fauna. Its glory is also due to its wetland ecosystems, coastal, marine ecosystems, and man-made plantations. There are many tribal communities living in harmony with nature in the state. Excellent areas have been earmarked as protected areas, which covers 6708 km. There are 3 biosphere reserves, 5 national parks,4 tiger reserves,14 bird sanctuaries, and 14 wildlife sanctuaries. The state also has a famous zoological park the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur Chennai. It has a prestigious botanical garden in Ooty housing many plant forms. The state is rich in medicinal plant diversity and has many sacred grooves.

Oisca the international NGO with recognition of UN has a strong presence in south India particularly Kerela, where it is implementing many environmental and socio-economic pro programs successfully working with govt. There is tremendous opportunity for Oisca to work in many spheres of development and environmental conservation in Tamil Nadu.oisca already has established chapters in Chennai, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Salem, Neyveli, Madurai, Trichy.we are to establish more chapters in the state covering other districts.oisca a purely voluntary international organization has tremendous potential to work for local area development through its chapters, comprising of committed volunteers and thereby contribute significantly for development of the state.
